Hashtags of professional translators

If you like to use social networks, you could not escape the #hashtags that invade our pages and our feeds. Big social networks’ accessory and powerful SEO tool, the hashtag is now part of our daily lives. Beyond the #love #food or #fashion, hashtags can not only express a mood or a state of mind (#mood or #happy …), but especially thematize a publication by assigning a category or subject.

Very popular on Twitter (and its constraint of 280 characters), the hashtag has evolved over time. You can find hashtags followed by a series of letters or symbols, which need an explanation because they do not evoke their meaning immediately.

Of course, the translation industry also has reference hashtags. Eazylang offers you a list of popular hashtags and their brief explanation.

#xl8 : this hashtag means the word “translate”. It is therefore one of the most used hashtags by the professional translators community. This is how it was created: “x” for “trans”, “l” for “l”, “8” for “ate”.

#xl8r means “translator” (designed on the same idea as #xl8)

#t9n means “translation”. Here is how it was built: “t” is the first letter of the word “translation”, 9 is the number of letters between the first and the last letter of the word, and “n” is the last letter

#1nt: “interpreting”, refers to the profession of interpreting (simultaneous oral translation)

#t9y: “terminology”, a common word in the lexical field of translators

#i18n and #g11n for “internationalization” and “globalization”

#l10n  means “localization”, a term frequently used by the translators community

#CATtool: “Computer Assisted Translation Tool”. They are used by professional translators in their daily work, especially to generate translation memories

#memoq and #trados: these hashtags refer to MemoQ and SDL Trados, CAT Tools

#MT means “machine translation”

#xl8job and #t9njob: “translate job” and “translaton job”, widely used especially in the recruitment of translators or in the search for new projects (especially by freelancers)

#medxl8 and #techxl8: usually translators have a specialization (an area of expertise that requires specific knowledge in terminology and professional jargon). These two hashtags mean “medical translation” and “technical translation”

#xl8quote for “translate quote” which means the presence of a quotation in the message. Since translation is closely related to languages, the translators community is very rich of quotes and proverbs

Other more obvious hashtags are also used in translation industry: #translating, #translator, #translation, #interpreting, #interpretation, #language, #languages, #linguistics, #linguist, #localization #globalization

To increase the chances of being seen and classified in the good theme, on the same publication we can find several hashtags combined. For example, for a recruitment, we can find #xl8job #translation #job #career on the same message.
